Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability. Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?

He received a doctorate in sociocultural anthropology from the University of Chicago, a master of industrial design degree from Pratt Institute, and a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree from Bucknell University. Early in his career, he served four years as an army nuclear weapons officer in Germany and just before teaching, worked as a design researcher within Haworth’s in-house think-tank, the Ideation Group. He and his wife presently run a design studio, “Materious”, which produces both commercial and more speculative products. Stephanie M. Bruce and Stephanie presently run a design studio, “materious”, which produces both commercial and speculative products. They have won several design awards, lectured internationally, and are currently working on a book project entitled, Discursive Design, which seeks to further legitimize and problematize alternate forms of design work that extend designers’ cultural agency.

Bernard Gonzalez will present on the design development process of that organization as well as the difficulties of managing large-scale manufacturing of “invisible” products. The challenges of “manufacturing by the mile and selling by the inch”, and what Meaning does innovation have to 3M when parts savings is measured in fractions of an inch. Bernard has a unique vision and passion for the environment and ethics in the product development process.

Paul Hatch, The Meaning of (ID) Life : How do we do what we do? In this presentation, Paul Hatch uses cognitive science to explain how industrial designers balance left and right brain halves utilizing both creative and rational thinking. Breaking down the typical personality traits of an industrial designer, he defines an ‘ID-DNA’ and explains how we can use this knowledge to improve how we design and manage design. Paul Hatch is President of the Chicago branch of TEAMS Design, which he opened in 1998. TEAMS Design now has five branches, over 80 industrial designers and has received well over 1000 Design awards. Paul has had articles published in design and business magazines and is also known for founding and running a ‘extreme debate’ event called Fight Club which eventually spread to five other states and was filmed as a pilot for a TV show. Wis. Stout ID student workshop at Brooks Stevens

1 comment so far

ST. PAUL, MN – Last week, Brooks Stevens, Inc hosted the University of Wisconsin, Stout IDSA Student Chapter in a high energy workshop focusing on process. We wanted to augment the students’ education with a real world experience in the design profession. We agreed on three key areas design students needed to learn pre-graduation: the value of planning and process, the “client experience,” and the dynamics of a team effort.   First, we divided into five groups and allowed them to work on five different projects through five different project phases. In this setting, the teams learned that sketching was a highly efficient mean to communicating an idea.  One student explained “The simulation of handing off design work to and from different groups emphasized the importance of communication visually and verbally. Many of my fellow students that attended, realized how working with teams of people can strengthen our work from raw concepts to refined designs”

To loosen the student’s minds we warmed up with a rousing game of Destructo!  Much to the chagrin of some students, this game did not involve any imbibing of malt liquor.  Nope.  It was a drawing game that involved destroying others’ ideas using the classic brainstorming rule stating “there are no wrong answers or ideas too outrageous.” After a disturbing game of Destructo, it was time to get serious.  We directed the student’s approach to the definition phase of the design process. We stressed the importance of defining the challenges first and forced them to prioritize their goals.  Too often, designers (and companies) fall into the trap of developing a design in search of a problem to solve.   Also attending was assistant professor of industrial design, Noah Norton. He summed it up stating,”Industry involvement is such an important part of design education and Brooks Stevens has been a fantastic partner. The Saturday design session got everyone involved in the process from identification to refinement. It was challenging, fun and a great learning experience.” In the end, our teams developed designs for interesting products, some more practical than others.  Their creativity and teamwork produced many well defined designs!  We loved the fashionable and functional biodegradable, leaf-shaped bandages. We were impressed by the full body motion-controlled video game for flying. The compact, sustainable shoe box was a viable solution for a better shopping/purchasing experience. Who can forget the multi-purpose prisoner restraint system featuring feather fringe? Did we mention they had fun?  Fringe equals fun!
